On August 10th, LAist is hosting a screening of “The Fast and The Furious,” the first film in a franchise that sparked an unprecedented rise in illegal street racing and street takeovers.
By scientific study, each release of these films results in an increase in dangerous driving. Evidence has shown that youth who grew up watching these films are those who are now involved in reckless speeding, street racing, and street takeovers.
Speeding is the single largest factor for traffic collisions and fatalities across Los Angeles and the entire US.
We know and expect Hollywood and the auto industry to glorify street racing, prioritizing profits over the lives of Angelenos.
We don’t expect it from LAist, a public radio station that purports to care about equitable and responsible reporting to the public.
SAFE has spent over a decade fighting for safer streets and victims of reckless driving. We’ve seen the devastation firsthand. We organized a protest against this franchise’s filming two years ago.
Help us tell LAist that this screening event is not what Southern California needs or wants. Instead, they should be reporting on the destruction — property damage, human lives lost, and physical/mental health issues — caused by street racing and street takeovers.
