Our 8th Annual Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition Was A Success!
We just wrapped up our 8th annual Streets, Art, SAFE Film Competition with great success!
This competition is a program for high school students to advocate for street safety through the arts created by Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE).
In Los Angeles, traffic collisions are the #1 killer of our youth aged 4- 14. And, with traffic incidents on the rise in school zones, it’s imperative to educate them.
The program aims to enlighten and empower students to do something about street safety through creative, fun, artistic, and impactful visual storytelling, while also developing film and visual arts expertise.
This year, there were 19 schools and over 300 students involved in the competition with 60 final PSA submissions entered. With two additional special awards, there were 17 winning categories with trophies and cash prizes for the top spots.
Castaic High School took home the #1 spot for both the Street Racing Kills Award and Best PSA Gold Award for their incredible “Speed Kills” PSA.
Golden Valley High School earned the Best PSA Silver Award with their PSA, “It Can Wait.”
And the Best PSA Bronze Award went to newcomers to the competition, Bishop Mora Salesian High School for their animated stop motion PSA, “Little Buddy.”
In the Move Over For Cyclists Awards category, the top spot also went to a newcomer in the competition: Ramona High School for their PSA, “Move Over.”
Awards were presented for most effective messaging in several categories, such as Ramona High School’s haunting Best Distracted Driving PSA, Vista del Lago High School’s impinging Best Driving Under the Influence PSA; Saint Monica High School’s artistic Best Pedestrian Safety PSA; and Castaic High School’s incredible Best Safe Driving PSA.
Students were also awarded in technical categories, such as Leichman CPTC, in the category of Best Post Graphics and Special Effects for their PSA, “Keep Your Cool!;” Ramona High School in the category of Best Cinematography with “Look Both Ways;” and Mountain View High School’s Best Make-Up with their PSA, “Sleeping Behind the Wheel.”
In summary, students learned about the many aspects of traffic safety, from driving under the influence to cycling and pedestrian safety and new traffic safety laws to distracted driving. They effectively, creatively, and impactfully demonstrated this knowledge through their PSAs.
