LA River Bike Path Rehab Completed Near Ferraro Fields
Thanks to speedy repairs, cyclists can safely pedal ahead on the LA River Bike Path near the Ferraro soccer fields. The repairs began in late January and were made possible by advocacy efforts from Streets Are For Everyone (SAFE), Pasadena Athletic Association, the local cycling community, and Councilwoman Nithya Raman and District 4, who pushed the project forward. The rehabilitation addressed deep fissures in the concrete, potholes, and large bumps. One particularly notorious bump, dubbed the 'bump of doom' by many cyclists, has now been smoothed out on the section of the path parallel to the Autry Museum.
Despite these improvements, there are still a few issues that need addressing. The most significant one is that a locked gate still blocks the path at the Riverside/Zoo Drive Bridge, where it bends south at the Ferraro Soccer fields and continues for about 1.5 miles. While some people have torn a hole in the fence to allow cyclists to pass through, it's clear that the gate must remain unlocked and open to make passage effortless. We've contacted Councilwoman Raman's office regarding this inconvenience for cyclists who want to continue their ride east towards Silver Lake and beyond. We have been told it will be handled soon.
There are also still minor bumps – annoying but not really hazardous – on the path closer to Los Feliz Blvd. It would have been nice if these could have been smoothed out at the same time as the other areas were getting rehabbed, but, living in Los Angeles, we have learned to lower our expectations.
Nevertheless, we're pleased with the project’s quick repairs to this path section, making it safer for its users. We hope to see you for our Finish The Ride Griffith Park event on April 7th, 2024. The spring views of the river will be lovely!
