Introducing the Clean Ride Crew: Volunteers Maintaining Bike Lanes Across L.A.

Blog written by Sam-Omar Hall of People Powered Media

Trees were trimmed, debris and garbage were scooped up, and lanes were swept, as volunteers fanned out on Venice Boulevard [last week] for a bike lane cleanup, organized by People Powered Media and SAFE.

Cyclists often must contend with bike lanes that are dirty, full of trash, and obstructed. This volunteer effort sought to harness people power to take direct action on local lanes. The volunteers also reported more serious issues — like cracks and potholes — to the city of L.A., using the 311 app.

This, the second cleanup on Venice Boulevard, saw a much larger turnout, and volunteers were able to cover a significant amount of ground. Thanks to a volunteer who brought loppers, the volunteers were able to trim trees that were growing into the bike lane.

Venice Boulevard is a major bike artery. On the Westside, it is one of the few streets that goes under the 405 Freeway, so it’s crucial that it remains safe and pleasant for cyclists.

This volunteer event was part of a new initiative: The Clean Ride Crew. This volunteer group will seek input on the bike lanes most in need of cleaning, and mobilize to these areas.

The next Clean Ride Crew event is set for the morning of Sunday, October 8th 2023. Save the date! Many more to come!
