SAFE is Addressing Speeding in 3 Different Ways

WE DID IT! The 3 priority bills that SAFE co-sponsoring this year are headed to the Governor’s desk! Now is the time to stand up and show our support for these life-saving bills, so we can push them through the finish line and get them signed into law.

Here is the breakdown of the 3 bills - Senate Bill 961, Senate Bill 1509, and Senate Bill 1297:

SB 961 - Vehicle Speed Technology Bill

SB 961 would require all autos sold in CA starting in 2029 to have a passive intelligent speed assistance system installed. This means if you drive at 10 MPH over the speed limit, your vehicle will alert you of the unsafe speed (similar to how a car alerts you when the seatbelt isn’t used).

SB 1509 - Creating Greater Accountability for Speeding

SB 1509 would increase the number of points on a driver’s record to 2 points (from one) if a driver is caught speeding at 26 MPH or more above the speed limit on any road with a speed limit of 55 MPH or less. 2 points would result in a warning letter sent from the DMV. If a driver gets 4 points in a year, their license is suspended.

SB 1297 - Pacific Coast Highway Traffic Safety

SB 1297 would allow the use of 5 speed safety cameras on PCH in Malibu to automatically ticket drivers who speed at 11 MPH over the posted speed limit.
