Ride and Celebrate National Bike Month with Exciting Activities

As we roll into May, we're not just marking the onset of warmer weather and blooming flowers; we're also kicking off National Bike Month, a nationwide celebration started by the League of American Bicyclists. All around Los Angeles and neighboring communities, a plethora of bike-centric activities are planned, beckoning newcomers to join the movement. So don’t worry; whether you're a daily commuter, a weekend explorer, or someone who relishes the wind in your hair, May is the month to ditch your car and try biking. Read on for some Bike Month activities near you!

  1. Start the month strong by planning your bike route for Bike To Work Week, which runs from Monday, May 13th, to Friday, May 17th. Check out Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Works Bike Path network MAP to plan your trip. 

  2. Hey, Santa Clarita folks! Join the city in celebrating the 20th year of Santa Clarita's annual Bike To Work Challenge the week of May 13th-May 17th by ditching the car and biking to work. (Register yourself or your business here to participate) Swing by a pit stop for a shot at winning awesome prizes during this week-long event. (FYI, Pit stops are only available May 16th)

  3. Pasadena also has loads of great ways to celebrate Bike Month. Highlights include a Bike-in movie screening of “The Engine Inside” on Wednesday, May 22, and an Ice Cream Ride on Sunday, May 26th, at Memorial Park. Check out more fun Pasadena Bike Month highlights and details here!

  4. Metro’s Bike Share is getting in on the action, offering great Metro Bike Share promotional deals in May. From 30-day passes for just $1 (!) to 50% off 365-day passes to free 30-minute rides, there are many reasons to try biking around Los Angeles.    

  5. Also listed on Metro Bike Share is a handful of community rides with different themes. Highlights include a community ride celebrating "8th and Grand: The Olympic Auditorium," an exhibition recounting this historic venue's 80-year history (1925-2005) that shaped Los Angeles' past and influenced its future.

  7. Exciting bike news alert! Metro has introduced a new bike locker system for secure bicycle parking, transitioning to a digital keyless setup for daily rentals. Plus, Metro has teamed up with Bike Hub to launch secure bike self-parking and maintenance stations at Union Station, Hollywood and Vine, Culver City, and Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station.   8. Are you looking to plan a healthy outdoor activity with your kids? Pencil in a fun ride in Santa Monica with Kidical Mass, organized by the City of Santa Monica on May 19th from 9 am-12 pm. This safe and enjoyable bike ride welcomes participants of all ages, from kids to seniors. 

  9. Lastly, on National Bike to Work Day on May 16th, Beverly Hills will provide a Pit Stop at Beverly Gardens Park from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM. On May 19th, there will be Free Bike Repairs and Used Bicycle Collection at Public Works Day at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. More information is here.
